Ask and ye shall receive

Praise the Lord to everyone out there. One could say that God’s blessings are what we get when we are obedient to him, but this verse illustrates that we must avail ourselves to the Lord so that he can help us. It is the difference between getting and receiving. Getting implies that we work for it, while receiving is what we do when God’s grace abounds. Grace is the unmerited gift from God for accepting Jesus as our savior.(read Is 1:19)

Jesus says, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” John 7:37-38. In these verses Jesus is using streams of living water as a metaphor for the Spirit, which fills us when we believe. We don’t earn it; we receive it.

When we take Christ into our hearts, God’s gifts abound and abound even more when we give of ourselves and share the love of Christ and the blessings we have received with others.

2 Cor 9:7 You must each make up your own mind as to how much you should give. Don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. For God loves the person who gives cheerfully. 8 And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.

This giving and receiving more is an interesting phenomenon. For people who believe that the world is a zero sum game, it doesn’t make sense. They think, “How can we get more by giving some of what we have away?” But, God’s logic works a different way. God says.

Mal 3:10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the LORD Almighty, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Let me prove it to you!

I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Let me prove it to you! When we trust God and follow his plan we receive far more than material goods. We receive mercy and forgiveness and the Lord’s strength and transforming power. Start each day with a prayer. Ask for and acknowledge that you have received God’s mercy and forgiveness. Ask for and receive strength to meet the challenges of the day and you will be surprised by the results. Ask for and receive God’s transforming power to change your life from wretch to a mighty man of God.

Col 3:8 But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. 9 Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old evil nature and all its wicked deeds. 10 In its place you have clothed yourselves with a brand-new nature that is continually being renewed as you learn more and more about Christ, who created this new nature within you.

Jesus says, “ask and you shall receive, knock and it will be opened for you.” All you need to do is to avail yourself to the power of our mighty God and he will give you abundantly more than you could ever dream to ask for.
